Calton Hill

Calton Hill

A prominent hill with views overlooking Edinburgh.

Calton Hill is one of Edinburgh's most iconic locations, and with its panoramic views, it is one of the best places to view Edinburgh.

Calton Hill is located at the centre of Edinburgh, and is a must-see during a visit to the capital city. This prominent hill can be seen from many parts of the city where its historic monuments stand tall.

Calton Hill can be accessed via the east end of Princess Street, just a 5 minute walk from Edinburgh Waverley Station. Calton Hill is well worth the climb, as once you get to the top you are gifted with the panoramic views of Edinburgh.

Other than its views, Calton Hill is also notably famous for its historic monuments. The most noticeable of these is the National Monument (also termed Edinburgh's Acropolis), which was inspired by the Parthenon in Athens. This monument also helped give Edinburgh its nickname - The Athens of the North. Another key monument which overlooks the city is the Dugald Stewart Monument which is a memorial to the Scottish philosopher Dugald Stewart. This was designed by the Scottish architect William Henry Playfair. You will also find the Nelson Monument, a tall tower, which was completed in 1816 to commemorate the death of Admiral Lord Nelson who died at the battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

On a clear day, I love coming here in the morning to catch that morning sun.
